僕がこのアルバムの存在を知ったのは1年ほど前だが、その時の衝撃が未だ忘れられないほどだ。
MY BLOODY VALENTINE の Loveless やPRIMAL SCREAM のEcho Dek （音源は削除）と出会った時と同じような衝撃だったはず。
東北アジア人に言葉でこのアルバムのみを紹介しても、その背景にあるものや社会情勢、またパロディー感覚は理解できないと思うのでこの辺で切り上げてｗ

A cassette was just released on Burger records a few months back. it’s an unreleased BJM rehearsal tape.

21 of the earliest BJM recordings from Anton Newcombe.
They have been available to download in recent years and most of the songs are unavailable elsewhere.
The quality of the recordings is reasonable and the music is a jangly Indie style (there’s no much of the 60’s retro feel here that becomes evident on future releases).
If at the time Anton was to properly record and produce this material then it would have been a decent debut BJM album.
However, what we have instead is an interesting look at early BJM and one or two unearthed gems of which “Fingertips” is probably the stand out.
Burger Records put out this tape, hit them up.
It’s probably out of print.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - POL POT'S PLEASURE PENTHOUES （DEMO）They have been available to download in recent years and most of the songs are unavailable elsewhere.
The quality of the recordings is reasonable and the music is a jangly Indie style (there’s no much of the 60’s retro feel here that becomes evident on future releases).
If at the time Anton was to properly record and produce this material then it would have been a decent debut BJM album.
However, what we have instead is an interesting look at early BJM and one or two unearthed gems of which “Fingertips” is probably the stand out.
“The collection of music known as Pol Pot’s Pleasure Penthouse is from a cassette Anton gave me in 1992 or maybe 1991.
It’s hard for me to remember the year exactly, as it was 20 years ago.
The cassette was a TDK type I, I think.
Anton wrote “The Brian Jonestown Massacer” on one side, misspelling massacre, and “Untitled – 1991” on the other.
I played it hundreds of times on my crappy car stereo in the early 90s.
Left it in the hot sun, etc.
Then the tape sat in a shoebox for 15 years, moving with me from place to place. In 2006, I had the cassette transferred to digital at Mr.
Toads in San Francisco.
The guy who runs the studio, Tardon Feathered, did the transfer.
I think it sounds pretty good for all that the cassette went through, but of course you can hear the “lower” sound quality, drop outs, etc.”

“I was surprised to read the new title “Pol Pot’s Pleasure Penthouse” and the names of the songs.
Because the title was given after the fact, I wonder how many of the song titles, like Cure I and II, are accurate.

奇しくもこのアルバムが市場に出た1991年はMY BLOODY VALENTINE のLoveless が発表された年と同じだ。
このアルバムをリアルタイムで知っていたなら、少しは僕の人生も変わっていただろうと思えるほど。
BJM のシューゲーズ・エラと好事家には揶揄される作品。
海外のマニアは「My Brian Jonestown Valentine」と称する作品。
